The term "maverick" comes from Samuel A. Maverick (1803–1870), a Texas pioneer, lawyer, and land baron. He acquired a herd of cattle but was famously negligent in branding his calves, allowing them to roam freely without an owner's mark. As a result, any unbranded animal found on the range came to be known as a "maverick."
Over time, the word evolved to describe a person who, like those unbranded cattle, doesn't adhere to the "brand" or conventions of a group and prefers to go their own way. This is the most common modern usage. A maverick is someone who thinks and acts differently from others, often refusing to conform to established customs, rules, or ideas. They are often seen as rebels, individualists, or dissenters.
